As a budding cartoonist, one thing that you will almost certainly need to do is to develop your style. Most cartoonists draw in a style which is instantly recognizable as their own, and which their audience can immediately identify as being the work of a particular person. If you’re keen to establish yourself as an artist, then here are a just a few of the ways in which you develop your own unique style.

Firstly, you will want to build up your confidence as a cartoonist. The key is to practice – find out what works and what doesn’t, and work on perfecting the skills which you have. Whether you’re cartoons are similar to the bright and eye-catching images which you might find on gaming sites like our personal favorite, PartyPoker, or you prefer to take a more minimalist approach, you will want to be confident in your chosen style, yet willing to develop this style when possible. Think about whether the look of your cartoons are suited to the themes of your strip, and whether they are able to adequately able to convey the right image. You may decide to include recurring characters, who should be immediately recognizable to regular readers. You can then use their various traits to your advantage in order to convey the meaning behind your cartoons more quickly and clearly.

You should also think carefully about the content of your cartoons – after all, becoming a cartoonist is not merely reliant on being able to draw. If your cartoons rely on humour, then make sure your jokes will be accessible to the intended audience. The words or themes are also intrinsic to the unique style which you will want to develop if you are to become an established cartoonist, so this is something which is well worth bearing in mind with every cartoon you create.
